Why did SpaceX pressurize Starship SN9 three times in one day without lighting the engines, what’s different on SpaceX’s second Super Heavy booster and why is SpaceX building floating Spaceports at Brownsville Harbor?

What do you think? When will the first Super Heavy fly?
Ni Gi
Ni Gi Pirms 18 dienām
I think it all sort of depends on how SpaceX plans to test the boosters. They will be putting a lot of Raptor engines on the line for testing. Given that the flight profile for Super Heavy is not dissimilar from a Falcon launch, I think we might see the first flight of Super Heavy also serve as the first orbital flight for Starship. I just think it's an unnecessary risk to do any hop tests or low altitude tests for Super Heavy. With all this being said, my best guess would be a full orbital test flight (or a high altitude ballistic test) sometime in late October or early November 2021. I really don't think we will see a full stack until SpaceX has completed and tested the orbital version of Starship. Considering we don't even know the final metal thickness for Starship yet, a test of Super Heavy before the end of the summer seems extremely unlikely.

While buying the oil rigs makes sense for landing and launching Super Heavy rockets, is it possible they bought them to get their own fuel supplies? Or is their enough natural gas close at hand?

If SpaceX were to tow their sea launch platforms out into international waters, they would completely bypass the FAA correct? I would assume that's the case, I just wasn't sure if there were any other considerations from international entities, or if there was any FAA oversight due to SpaceX being a US registered business.

For one of ur future animations maybe consider a 737,747,757,767 vertically next to a starship jus to give the peeps a realistic idea about the size... hull size in particular would be very interesting... jus a suggestion...

Is this supposed to be equipped with the rocket at the shore and then dragged onto the sea for launch? Or would the rocket be brought to the anchored platform? Thanks!

Oil rigs are usually turned into razor blades about 20 years after being built, it's nice to see a new use for them..

Does the Moon version of the starship need sea level raptors at all? Wouldn't they be high enough in their flight profile to skip them? If three Raptors can lift a Starship off in 1G wouldn't 3 Vac Raptors be plenty to take a partially laden ship off the 1/6 G surface of the moon?
Seth Bond

Have you ever considered what a Skylab style "Wet Workshop" would look like for Starship?
Arnold Rimmer
Arnold Rimmer Pirms Mēneša
Sea launch platforms allow a lot more launch opportunities. For example, if some rich person wanted to build a launch platform in secret. Why build one when you can build two at twice the price.
Allen Chucky Mann
Allen Chucky Mann Pirms Mēneša
And that is with existing technology that SpaceX has currently so for instance the Falcon heavy tanks has two tanks on either side but instead of two tanks the mother starship has four starships a total of five starships in a configuration or cluster the mother starship will have to be built slightly differently and slightly longer so that she can carry the cluster of four ships starships so we know there is going to be a total of five ships a mother four starship. The mothership will be launched into space first and the four star ships will join the Mother starship and will Be cuplink together like the Falcone heavy with the two boosters but instead of boosters she has four stars ships around with her
Allen Chucky Mann
Allen Chucky Mann Pirms Mēneša
Just a thought that came to my mind. For starship voyage to Mars, instead of filling up each and every starship with a full tank. Elon can create a mother starship that will or can carry a cluster of four starships . These four starships only need fuel for landing and taking off from the surface of Mars and then the mothership has enough fuel to take her back to Earth.

Johan Pirms Mēneša
As a petroleum engineer, I had to wrinkle my nose when you called it an oil rig. The thing in the picture is clearly a drilling rig, it is meant to dig holes in the ground, not to suck up any oil. Edit: Oh, what you see at 9:30 is an oil rig with the flame burning (called flaring) for burning off excess gas. So the oil rig at 9:30 is not the ENSCO 8500.

I'm not an environment nut or anything, but has anyone thought of the damage launching starships could do to sea life? If starships are so loud that being in close proximity can kill, then could they kill aquatic life? I'm sure the sea depth dampens the sound but still. Again, not someone who really cares but it'd be interesting to know if there are any repercussions.

What an amazing venture! Now, it does look like humanity will finally start exploring (and hopefully soon colonizing) our star system. It is a pity that I will not live to see our especies be launched into interstellar undertakings; yet I am certain that mankind will successfully meet this extremely daunting task (optimistically by the turn of the next century). BRAVO!

I have a question. Spacex falcon 9 second stage- what happens to it once the mission is complete? Do they de orbit it ,or send it to a parking orbit?
EimajOzear Pirms Mēneša
The final orbit will usually result in re-entry after 1 to 15 years in orbit. This is true for both LEO and GTO payloads. In the case of GTO, the perigee is usually below 600km, which provides enough drag to de-orbit within the above timeframe. EDIT: The Falcon 9 upper stage 2017-025B is an exception however, the 914km perigee is much too high to allow for re-entry within any reasonable timeframe. In these cases it is cheaper and easier to "just forget about it" than to think about disposal. If they had the means to deorbit remotely, I would think they would have done it by now.

Search for 'SeaLaunch' and you will find the basis for the idea of using Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (MODU's) for launching rockets from the Equator in the Pacific Ocean. Bet on at least two (2) years and $100 Million BEFORE they get even one of these operating 'properly'.
